What is sexual immorality?

The times we live in are those in which the true values are inverted or even perverted. Their meaning is distorted from good into evil. After a 70 years period of socialism and atheism people do not longer make the difference between good and evil. That’s why, it is necessary to define these values again. So, what is sexual immorality? Some say that immoral is only when you are unfaithful to your partner of marriage. In this article I want to make a larger presentation of what God defines in the Bible as sexual immorality.

Adultery

Adultery is every sexual act where at least one of the implied persons are a part of the covenant of marriage. God is very categorical in regards to this sin and He says in the 10 commandments:

You shall not commit adultery. (Exodus 20:14)(NASB)

This was such a grave sin that it had to be punished with death, as the following passage says:

If there is a man who commits adultery with another man’s wife, one who commits adultery with his friend’s wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death. (Leviticus 20:10)(NASB)

Fornication

Fornication is the sexual act where only unmarried persons are implied. Today, it is spread a very wrong opinion, that says that it is sin only to change your partner, but if you are unmarried, you are free to have sexual relations with the person you like. Even some girls, that have decided to be virgins until marriage, are mocked by the other girls around them. Fornication is a sin as grave as adultery because it affects gravely the future marriage and the eternal fate of that person. The Bible writes in this sense:

Marriage is to be held in honor among all, and the marriage bed is to be undefiled; for fornicators and adulterers God will judge. (Hebrews 13:4)(NASB)

According to the cited biblical verse, those who commit adultery defile trough this their future marriage and the marriage bed, that is their sexual relation. No one will be able to rejoice of a defiled sexual relation, but it will transform his/her future wife or husband in an unguilty victim. That’s why, if you are a man, it is important to propose marriage to a virgin and a righteous girl, and if you are a girl, to get married to a man, who didn’t live immorally. It is true that such kind of men are fewer, but they still exist. I was very glad and I praised the Lord when I heard the statement the Brazilian footballer made to journalists, that he had been virgin before his marriage and he hadn’t ever had any sexual relations with another woman. This is a real MAN and a powerful Christian, that wasn’t defeated by the pressure of the time or of the thinking, that is “in fashion”. Follow up his example! Hold your future marriage and your marriage bed undefiled.

Sexual perversions

These are a great evil and in our world the immoral people try to present them as something normal, calling them “untraditional sexual orientation”. God calls them in the Bible “abominations” and “ defiled things” and He gives a list of them. Here is the list:

None of you shall approach any blood relative of his to uncover nakedness; I am the LORD. (Leviticus 18:6)(NASB)

In continuation, the text defines clearly who are considered blood relatives, with which the marriage is banned. These are the parents, the step parents, the sister, the brother, the nephew, the niece, the aunt, the sister of the brother, the aunt from the uncle, the daughter-in-law, etc. All these sexual relations are incest. After that, the list continues with other things that are defined as perversions:

You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination. Also you shall not have intercourse with any animal to be defiled with it, nor shall any woman stand before an animal to mate with it; it is a perversion. Do not defile yourselves by any of these things; for by all these the nations which I am casting out before you have become defiled. (Leveticus 18:22–24)(NASB)

Immorality of the mind

This is another way of immorality that is very spread and when a man begins to practice such kind of immorality, he will necessarily start to practice some of them or maybe all of those written above. What does immorality of the mind mean? Lord Jesus defines it in this way:

But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. (Matthew 5:28)(NASB)

The sinful nature provokes every man to lust sexually another woman than the one that is his wife. But, every man is responsible to learn to control his mind and his eyes, because who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart, and the adultery committed in the heart is equivalent to the one committed physically, because it will finally lead you to physical immorality of all kinds. That’s why, it is important to learn to control your thoughts and your eyes. The righteous Job said in regards to this:

I have made a covenant with my eyes; how then could I gaze at a virgin? (Job 31:1)(NASB)

Today, people led by the wickedness of their heart, have developed a whole industry of pornography. A very great part of Internet pages contain pornography. “Playboy” magazine, that is one with an immoral content and that spreads much immorality in the world, has 15 million readers and is one of the most read magazine in the world. If these people only realized how much evil they had brought in the their lives and families through this magazine, they wouldn’t have bought it. Unfortunately, when they realize this evil, it is too late, because their own lives and their own families have already been destroyed.
All these practices that have been listed above are sexual immorality that brings very many grave consequences unto people’s lives. Tomorrow I will publish an article about the Archangels Michael and Gabriel and in a day I will come with another article where I will touch the subject “How to protect yourself of the pressure of sexual immorality that is around?”

First of all, I would like to say thank you for talking with me about this topic because I have had a huge problem understanding her side because she herself knows what she wants to do, but she cannot explain it without bashing me and we have lost our friendship over it but you have cleared a lot of it up for me. Thank you for also not “throwing” Bible verses at me, that is greatly appreciated. I also want to point out that we both have different views of Christianity, you think yours is right and I think mine is right and we can argue forever because it is based on personal faith and belief. And thank you for saying that “That is your choice, but remember that all choices have consequences” because that is true, it is my choice and I will face the consequences for my actions.Something I wanted to mention was that me and my girlfriend talked about our two denominations and how that may be a reason that we are not on the same page. Let me explain to you what we talked about. She goes to a nondenominational church here in Seattle that is extremely modern: modern music, modern chairs, modern clothing etc. I was raised in Catholic Church and now I hate it becuase I cannot stand the way it functions. THEY ALWAYS ASK FOR MONEY. And they already have so much. They have gold everywhere and they dress in robes that symobolize certain things and last year they remodeled the Church and even installed HEATED FLOORS and it all cost over a million dollars. Now if someone can ever explain to me the reason or point behind that then I will be extremely happy. I just can't stand the Church and I think that may have pushed me from that part of my life as well as the Bible which by the way they continuously shoved down our throats. So back to our conversation:I cannot and never ever will accept the idea of me treating her as a sex toy or that she is less to me than a prostitute because I assure you that was not the case. No matter what the Bible says, I just cannot accept that idea or Truth because there was love there and there was something special.Secondly, I really do believe in God, it just all comes back to my problems with the church and the current Bibles and the fact that they are translations and I see that you say it doesnt matter because it speaks the Truth and I understand that. But that is why I follow the values and ideas it puts forth behind all the stories and sayings. And I will admit that sometimes I change it to fit what I think God will judge me on, but that is only becuase we live in a new world where people are dying of starvation at the age of 5 while one man is making 25,000,000 dollars for playing 82 games of basketball a year, which by the way he LIKES doing. I would love to play a sport I love for money. This world is so messed up (the f word would be perfect for this statement to replace “messed”) that some insurance executive can make over a 1,000,000,000 (yes that is a billion) dollars in one year. And then they go spend it on the most expensive clothes and food while people are dying of simple diseases that could be cured with a 1/10 of that money. It baffles me the way the world functions today, I dont know how to even describe it. And therefore I try to make myself the best I can be, and I adapt to the world today. You say sex before marriage is wrong and immoral and lets just say that I was to live by that. Then sex with someone that I did truly love for 2 years is much better than sex with some unknown drunk girl at a party. The world has changed. No one can go a day without seeing some sort of sex-driven ad or commercial or anything. It is usually against their will, they don't do it on purpose, but that is how the world is now. Its about money and money and more money and people do whatever they can to get that money. ***** I have read the above material over and I will admit it sounds like an excuse and that I am turning the Bible teachings into something to please me, but I am just trying to explain how I formulate my views and beliefs.*****I want to make it clear that I do agree with you that true love is not shown through sex, but I don't see the complete wrong in it if it is with someone you do love and you do take care of and make happy and are kind and respectful too. I know what it says in the Bible, but what is so wrong with it? It just doesn't register.Thank you for clarifying this with me: “If God condemns your actions and someone shares that with you then the person sharing the info is not judging or condemning you, God is. There is a huge difference. ” That helped a lot.

  • I am glad to have a rational conversation with you. I lived in Seattle for a year (off topic but thought I would share) as a missionary. I love the area and want to visit some day with my family. I served as a campus minister at Green River Community College. Now back to the topic at hand.I do not have my own version of Christianity. I was raised in a very religious environment where many people considered themselves Christians (not based on what the Bible teaches, but instead, based on what they wanted to believe about Christianity. I was right along with everyone else. I was not a Christian and realized that when I repented and was born again (became a new person from the inside out). I follow the only true form of Christianity, the one clearly explained in the Bible. Personal faith and belief do not make you right or wrong. I really feel that you have bought into the lie of relativism (everybody is right because they believe, there is no black and white, right or wrong, everything is right because you believe it). Terrible worldview and completely impossible because of it is illogical. You can have all the faith in the world in the wrong thing and the thing will continue to be wrong. I hope that you understand the logic behind what I am saying. Have you ever studied logic? I have many times so if there is a need for more explanation then please let me know. I know Mars Hill Church very well. Not all Catholic Churches are the same. There are Churches that do not have anything to do with God in the Catholic denomination just like there are in any of the major denominations. But on the other hand, there are Catholic churches that follow the teaching of the Bible, just like the other denominations. So painting with a broad brush is not encouraged. I do understand your complaint. People with evil intentions have been around since the beginning when sin came into the world. The Old Testament speaks about them, especially the ones in the Church (universal) and what will happen to them because of the fact that they turn people away from God. I understand what you are saying about your girlfriend because I had a similar situation in my past, before I became a Christian. I had a girlfriend for many years whom I swore up and down that I loved. I rationalized my actions based on “love”. Once I came to my sense or in other words, saw reality for what it is, I realized that I did not love her and only used her. I had to place my pride aside and admit that I was wrong. That was not easy but it was very freeing. You wrote, “And I will admit that sometimes I change it to fit what I think God will judge me on,” Do you realize what you are admitting to? The fact that you know better than God or worse that you think that you are equal with Him. Why are you envious of what others have? Do you realize what the 10 commands teach about coveting, being envious of what others have. By the way, what are you doing to help the starving 5 year olds instead of judging what others are not doing? I know these are tough questions but I would encourage you to think about them. As far as insurance goes, the total profit of the insurance business is 10 billion a year while Medicaid alone wastes over 60 billion a year. One has to earn every penny of that 10 billion while the other does nothing but take from others and then waste. Which would you pass judgment on? Sex outside of marriage is wrong if it in a monogamous relationship or a one night stand, God does not distinguish between the two acts. Porn has been around since the beginning of sin so that is a terrible excuse. I was a slave to porn for almost 10 years before I was set free through the power of Jesus Christ. I am not speaking theory to you. I have been in the muck and mud of this world. Thanks for being open and engaging in dialogue. I look forward to more conversations.

Sorry it took so long to respond. I've been really busy with finals and work. But back to the conversation, yes I do understand your logic and I agree that the world has bought into the idea of relativism. But then again religion and faith are illogical as well as irrational. And maybe that is my problem; maybe I am too rational and I am looking for an absolute proof which we all know can not be provided. So maybe it will take me 10 years as it did for you, maybe that point in my life hasn't come yet where I truly feel in my heart that I need to change, that I need to better myself.Something I forgot to mention…a problem I have with Christianity and the Bible is that there are several denominations that are part of Christianity, for example Catholics and Protestants, but that have different versions of the Bible. How can you be a Christian and believe the Bible as literal, when a different denominations within the same religion has removed entire sections of what you consider to be the ultimate word of God, the only Bible. Sorry if the tone sounds angry or something, but I am just seeking your explanation.I am not envious of those rich atheletes or celebrities. The point I was trying to make was that no one should be making that much money and that in the dysfunctional world that we live in today, I try to keep my sanity by doing the best I can. I wasn't judging those people that are making 25 million for playing basketball, I was just saying that the system should be changed so they make 1/50 of that at the most. The world isn't perfect and I am not perfect, so I do the best I feel I can at this point in my life. As you said it took you a while to figure it out, and may be I just need time. But I don't think I am equal to or better than God and I don't think I know more than he does.

  • What do you study and what kind of work do you do? (hope that is not too personal, just curious). Being logical and rational is very important when looking at faith. God never wants us to blindly accept what we do not understand (not that we can ever fully understand God but He has given us enough info in His Word). As far as absolute proof, what more do you need than the resurrection? I would recommend you read the following book “The Case for the Resurrection of Jesus”. You can find it at http://www.amazon.com/Case-Resurrection-Jesus-G...I would advise you to start searching right away. Get to someone who can teach you how to study the Bible inductively, precept upon precept (http://store.precept.org/default.aspx?skinid=2&...)The Bible was originally written in 3 languages; Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. It was complied to form what is known as the Bible today. Those Scriptures have been translated many times over the years into many different languages. In the English language there are several kinds of translations; word for word from the original languages, thought for thought of the original languages, paraphrase of the original, etc. I would recommend a word for word translation from the original because you get the closest to the original even if you do not speak/read/understand the original languages. There are also tools that help people who do not read/understand the original languages of the Bible, compare their translations to the original in order to discover the intended meaning of a word in the original. Check out this website for tips on studying the Bible in your own language with help from the original languages (http://www.biblestudytools.com/).The reason that there are many denominations is because not everyone studies the Bible for what is there. Instead, they have their own preconceived theology that they filter the Bible through. When this happens people can be confused and misled about the Bible says, and also about what is actually written in the Bible. Some people hold to teaching that they think are in the Bible but actually, those teachings are from their theological background and not even in the Bible. There are other mistakes that people make because they do not study the Bible, but instead, listen to what other people say about the Bible. Here are 2 prime examples. Many people believe that the fruit that Adam and Eve ate while in the Garden of Eden was an apple. The Bible actually does not say. The only words that is used is fruit. People assume that the Bible says it was an apple. Another would be the prophet Jonah, when he was swallowed by a big fish. Many think that the Bible says he was swallowed by a whale. That is simply not correct. The Bible that I use is the NASB (New American Standard Bible) which is a word for word translation from the original languages (http://www.biblegateway.com/versions/New-Americ...) Jesus never spoke in that manner about sin. If he condemmned divorce he would just say it is a sin to divorce your wife. In Ch5 verse 27 jesus is talking about adultery and that's it.

The whole argument of the meaning of porneia and fornication, either literally or within context is over shadowing the fact that st.paul was never vague when it came to sins. As he explained it is a sin to divorce your wife, he would hav explained it was a sin to hav sex before marriage. And by the way, the word fornication itself has many meanings.St.Paul was very clear when he said a woman must wear a veil while praying. No one argues about how the church chose to disregard that over the years.Leviticus never mentions pre-marital sex as being prohibited and explains what really is prohibited.Jesus never spoke about sex outside marriage other than that with prostitutes and married partners. As was said before, it is very hard to look for aswers when you are actually looking for what you wish to hear. The whole argument of the meaning of porneia and fornication, either literally or within context is over shadowing the fact that st.paul was never vague when it came to sins. As he explained it is a sin to divorce your wife, he would hav explained it was a sin to hav sex before marriage. And by the way, the word fornication itself has many meanings.

St.Paul was very clear when he said a woman must wear a veil while praying. No one argues about how the church chose to disregard that over the years.

Leviticus never mentions pre-marital sex as being prohibited and explains what really is prohibited.

Jesus never spoke about sex outside marriage other than that with prostitutes and married partners.

As was said before, it is very hard to look for aswers when you are actually looking for what you wish to hear. It is hard to change your mind after dovoting your life to a cause, albeit a wrong one.

  • The Old Testament (Gen.2) explains that sex comes after the man and woman have been joined together (what we call marriage today). So it is understood from that explanation and the explanations of the words used; like fornication and adultery (both are sex outside of marriage). Jesus quoted Genesis 2 directly, so yes Jesus did teach that marriage is first and then sex.

Have anyone ever wondered why God did not speak indepth about Masterbation or Kissing and so on? How am I suppose to know how to what to do when i start having sexual urges. Sometimes i cannot control myself what am i suppose to do. Everyone goes around telling you not to do certain thing but now one tells u how they dealt with theirs'. I am sure all of us know that we are living in a world were sexual immorality is dominant, young people are influence by everything they see. People, we need to work harder or we will loose a lot of our Christian young people including me.

  • Wow, I'm having the same problem!! In a sense, I know that it is wrong to do that (even though the Bible doesn't really speak on it), but how do you fight the urges? Please someone help because I feel myself slipping, and the thing I despise the most is letting God down.

  • I too am having the problem of looking at pornography and masturbating to it. It is wrong, and I feel so guilty afterwoods. But without a doubt, it is wrong to do. We as christians know this, even if we can't find scriptures to confirm it. It is a battle with our flesh. We have to bring it under subjection or control. Make up your mind to stop it, pray for help. do not be discouraged if you slip up; just sincerely repent, and move on. no doubt, you will slip up numerous of times, but don't give up. Try your BEST to stop it, and you will. Remember, you can't fool GOD. He knows if you are really trying. Eventually, you will overcome it, and you will be in a position to help someone else with this same problem. I'll be pray for you. God Bless!!
